Edvin Turkof – Medical Career

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Edvin Turkof has authored numerous scientific publications and led several medical research projects both in Austria and abroad (USA, Egypt, Ukraine, India, Nepal). For his scientific work, he received the prestigious Peat Prize from the Indian Society of Plastic Surgery in 1993 and the Billroth Prize from the Austrian Medical Association in 1994. He continues his academic activity today — his most recent publications focus on breast reduction, carpal tunnel syndrome, and stem cells derived from autologous fat.

Through extensive training with international experts in Chicago, Lisbon, Montpellier, Paris, Brussels, Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Tel Aviv, Bombay, and Botucatu, he quickly established himself as a leading figure in his field. His innovative contributions have influenced aesthetic, reconstructive, and microsurgery alike.

  • 1999: Introduced vibration-assisted liposuction in Vienna.
  • 2002: Implemented the Loeb technique for lower eyelid and tear trough correction.
  • 2005: Performed lymph vessel transplantation.
  • 2006: Introduced the subperiosteal midface lift (midfacelifting).
  • 2008: Pioneered autologous fat breast reconstruction at Vienna General Hospital (AKH Wien) and expanded this approach in 2009 to include aesthetic breast augmentation with autologous fat.

His work has earned international recognition. Since 2004, Prof. Turkof has been regularly invited to international congresses and workshops to lecture on aesthetic surgery.

In 2008, together with Mag. Elis Sonnleitner, he began writing the 13-volume series Enzyklopaedia Aesthetica (www.enzyklopaedia-aesthetica.com), a comprehensive reference work on cosmetic procedures that discusses techniques, risks, and complications in detail (see “A Matter of the Heart”). This series set new standards for patient education and remains unique worldwide. In 2020, he added a 14th volume titled Breast Reconstruction after Breast Cancer and High-Risk Cases.

In 2019, Prof. Turkof became the exclusive partner of DHI International in Austria — the inventor of the patented (since 1965) FUE single-hair extraction method for hair transplantation.

In 2022, he opened the Medizentrum Wien, a multidisciplinary medical center specializing in aesthetic medicine. Today, hair transplants using this world-leading technique are performed there almost daily. Prof. Turkof has been the medical director of both Medizentrum Wien and DHI Vienna since 2021.
